Mahakam Sumber Jaya (MSJ) is a bituminous thermal coal mine located approximately 25 kilometres north of Samarinda on the north side of the Mahakam River in the province of East Kalimantan. MSJ operates under a Generation III Coal Contract of Work (CCoW) which expires in 2034. MSJ is situated in the centre of the Kutai Basin, within the Miocene age Balikpapan formation. The region is dominated by NNE-SSW trending folds paralleling the coastline known as the Samarinda Anticlinorium. Coal is mined from multiple seams, with an average dip of 15 degrees
